Power outages can strike without warning, especially during severe weather. While most homeowners think about flashlights, food, and water during a blackout, one system that shouldn’t be overlooked is your HVAC. Knowing how to safely shut down your HVAC system during a power outage can protect it from damage and help it restart more smoothly when the power comes back on.

Here’s a step-by-step guide to safely managing your HVAC system when the lights go out.

Why It’s Important to Shut Down Your HVAC During a Power Outage

When power is suddenly cut, your HVAC system can experience a hard shutdown, which may lead to electrical surges, blown fuses, or damage to internal components when power is restored. Even more dangerous is a power surge during the outage or when electricity returns. This can permanently damage your system’s control board or compressor.

Taking a few quick actions can help you avoid unnecessary repairs or replacements.

Step 1: Turn Off the HVAC System at the Thermostat

As soon as the power goes out, the first thing you should do is turn off your HVAC system at the thermostat. This prevents it from trying to restart automatically when power returns, which could happen during a voltage spike or surge.

Set the thermostat to “off” for both heating and cooling.

If you have a smart thermostat, check to ensure it powers down properly or switch it off manually if needed.

If your thermostat doesn't have a battery back-up, proceed to step two.

Step 2: Turn Off the HVAC Breaker at the Electrical Panel

For added protection, shut off the power supply to your HVAC system at your breaker box. This step is especially important if the outage is expected to last for more than a few minutes, or if your thermostat doesn't have a battery back-up.

Turning off the breaker ensures no electricity flows to the system when power returns, reducing the risk of electrical damage.

Step 3: Protect the Outdoor Unit

If your air conditioner or heat pump is in use, it’s a good idea to inspect the outdoor unit. During storms, flying debris or falling branches can damage the unit while it’s not operational.

Clear any debris or loose objects near the outdoor unit.

If safe to do so, consider covering the unit temporarily to prevent debris from causing damage, but be sure to remove any coverings before restarting the system.

Step 4: Wait for Stable Power Before Restarting

Once power is restored, don’t rush to turn everything back on immediately. Voltage may fluctuate for a few minutes after an outage, which could harm sensitive electronics and HVAC components.

Wait 5 to 10 minutes after power returns to ensure it’s stable.

During this time, you can restore power to lights and essential appliances to check for consistency.

Step 5: Restore HVAC Power Safely

When you’re confident the power is stable:

Turn the HVAC breaker back on at the electrical panel.

Go to the thermostat and set it back to your desired settings.

Listen for the system to kick on and observe for any unusual sounds or smells.

If your system doesn’t come back on or seems to struggle, turn it off again and call a professional.

Bonus Tip: Consider a Surge Protector or Backup Power

To prevent future damage, talk to an HVAC professional about installing a dedicated surge protector for your HVAC system. This extra layer of protection can help safeguard your investment during power surges.

Additionally, a whole-home Generac generator can keep your HVAC running—or at least safe—during extended outages.
